Baking Cakes

One of my first loves has always been baking. I don't do it nearly enough anymore. A coworker asked me if I could craft a special cake for her mother's 50th birthday. Here are some photos of what I came up with.

Ready to be frosted

Dirty Iced

Added final icing layer and borders

Finished product
I used boxed cake mix. Duncin Hines Super Moist always turns out the best cakes for me. I used a yellow and a chocolate fudge. I made my own buttercream icing too. I used a recipe that the lady who taught the Wilton cake decorating classes used. It wasn't exactly like Wilton's but it's SOOOo good.

I got a lot of compliments on the cake. One person even said it was better than a local bakery where they normally get their cakes from. *BLUSH* I'm taking a break from my Etsy store and other crafts that I've been doing for other people to focus a little more on my own crafts. I haven't done anything for myself in quite a while. With my 2nd blogiversary here, I've noticed that I need to spend a little more time with myself. I mean, this will be a good thing for you (if you still read my blog) because I'll actually have more crafts to post!!

Stay crafty!

Crafty Love and Hugs

Good Morning Bloggy World,

How have you been? Things have been crazy around here, very little crafting going on. I had plans to add new items to my Etsy shop for the holiday season, didn't get around to it. I had plans to start and finish a baby album for one of my best friends, didn't do it. It just seems like I go to bed and wake up and months have gone by. But you aren't here to listen to me complain about my ordinary life.

Yesterday I spoke with one of the girls that I met at the local crop spot. She was effected pretty badly by Hurricane Sandy that churned up the East Coast at the end of October. She lives in Seaside Heights, NJ. Her and her husband did evacuate as instructed and took very few items with them when they left to stay at her dad's house. Once they were allowed back, they realized that their home had been completely flooded by the storm.

Let me tell you a little about Mary.

From the moment I met her, I knew that I had met someone who's soul is truly genuine. Her and her husband have been together for about 20 years. No children, other than their dog Kiwi. Mary is a devoted scrapbooker and crafter. She makes albums for all of her nieces and nephews, neighbors, etc. She had an album for every vacation her and her husband have taken. She never hesitated to help anyone. Mary is unable to work, due to medical issues, and spends her days crafting when she can. At the crops, she volunteered her time to help the owners of the store, when their staff fell short. She would help customers visualize their next project. She helped fellow crafters, whether it be cutting something from her Gypsy to gluing die cuts together. Everyone I've met, speaks so highly of her. A true selfless person.

Luckily when she evacuated, she took her Cricut Expression, Gypsy, and some paper. However, she lost everything else in the storm. All of her paper, Sizzix and Slice cartridges, Cricut cartridges, punches, even her albums. There was mold already growing on everything and rust had already started forming on everything metal. I can only imagine what it's like to lose everything. All your memories, photos, etc.

I want to gather a few things for Mary. Just some things to help her start her collection over again. As scrapbookers, we know how much goes into the things we purchase. All I'm asking is that you take a look at those items you've had FOREVER and maybe decide to part with them. If you want to make a card to give her some encouragement and remind her that life will move on and fall back together, that would be fine too. I'm going to be doing this instead of my annual blogiversary. I'll accept donations until  December 21st. If you are interested in helping, whether it be donating some of your own stash, making a card, a gift card to Michael's/AC Moore/Jo-Ann's, or just words of encouragement please email me at natashacrafts[at]gmail[dot]com and I'll give you more details and an address.

Thank you for taking time to read, have a blessed day, and as always stay crafty!

Happy Birthday Miss A

Last Tuesday was Miss A's birthday and on Saturday we had a slumber party for her and some friends. I found a cake idea on Pinterest that I wanted to try. It wasn't as successful as I had hoped, but I know why. I need to make my own icing instead of relying on that crap in the can.

I took a 13x9 sheet cake and cut in half to make a double layered cake. After frosting it, I took the number 12, which I cut using the font on "Life's A Party" and put it in place. Then I added a ton of sprinkles.

After I removed the numbers this is what the cake look like. The only think that matters is she loved it. So happy 12th birthday Miss A!!

Stay crafty.

Birthday Cupcakes - Witches Hat

What did I do last weekend? Well I baked and decorated 30 cupcakes for a special birthday party. Some of my coworkers have come to know me as the "crafty" lady. If it requires an ounce of creativity, then I'm the go-to person. I don't mind. It makes me have to do stuff I would otherwise put off.

I was given a photo to replicate and although I went the cheap route and used canned frosting instead of making my own, I think these came out cute. Here's the recipe:

Cupcakes
2 boxes of White Cake mix (use oil and water measurements from box)
15 drops of orange food coloring (I used Wiltons, because that's what I had one hand)
1 can of white vanilla frosting (or whatever flavor you like as long as it's white)
10 drops of yellow food coloring (for decorating the top)

- Prepare cupcakes by directions on box
- Add orange food coloring to batter and mix well
- Once cupcakes have cooled, mix yellow food coloring with icing and frost using a star tip to "create" hair

Witches Hat
24 Sugar Cones (they should be over by the ice cream)
2 Bags of Chocolate Melting Wafer (in the candy section of your craft store, the AC Moore brand works better)
20 drops of black food coloring (Again, I used Wiltons) **
Black sugar **

**Wear some gloves while assembling the cones, black food coloring and black sugar will stain hands for a day ;-)

- Melt chocolate as directed on packaging. I used my microwave
- Mix in food coloring to create a darker chocolate
- Roll sugar cone in melted chocolate, then roll in sugar.
- Set on a sheet of wax paper to dry
- I used some orange frosting to write the "10" on each cone, but you can decorate to your liking
- Once dry, stick on top of the cupcakes

These were a huge hit! Even the parents were fighting over the cupcakes. The funniest part, watching the kids run around with black lips and fingers. I bet their parents loved me!!

Aaargh!!!

Hi Crafty Friends,

My apologies for being MIA. It's been a crazy few weeks around here. Between taking some time off to vacation down in WV with my family and filling Etsy orders, I didn't even realize that we are halfway through the month of October.

I just wanted to share a quick photo of the 72 pirate chest invitations I finished up last night. They are on their way to Toronto later today. YAY!!

Raising Money for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia

Greetings followers,

Every year my company has a bowl-a-thon to raise money for charity. This year, we've selected the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). They are a wonderful organization and they help many children in and around the tri-state area. I've been bowling for charity every year that I've been with my company. I'm not the greatest bowler, but it isn't about the score at the end of the night. In previous year's we donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, however this year we wanted to do something a lot closer to home. Please consider making a small donation.

Donations can be completely anonymous.

Make a donation here.

Thank you in advance for even considering a donation.

Sincerely,
Natasha

YourStory Fail

Good Morning everyone,

I have had the most horrible experience with my YourStory. The first one I ordered worked exactly once. It had the most horrible smell to it and after the first use, it never turned on again. So I called Provo Craft and they offered to send me a new one. Saying that they don't normally do this, but they would just this once. Great! Or so I thought.

The new one arrived in about 10 days and I carefully unpacked it and plugged it in. No awful smell, everything worked great. It even worked 3 more times. So last night, I plug it up to laminate another order of hall passes from my Etsy shop. Wouldn't you know it, the damn thing ate my hall pass!! Just decided that it was going to wind it up around the little roll bar inside the machine. There's no way to get it out and now I am out of ANOTHER laminating machine.

Luckily yesterday when I was out looking for some silver eyelets to complete this project, I noticed that A.C. Moore had the Purple Cow Laminating machine for 30.00. Guess I will be making another trip out there this evening.

Anyone have any experience with the Purple Cow machine?

Thank You Gift Bag and Card Holder

I've been on a roll with these gift card holders. A coworker of mine has been organizing our weekly summer happy hours after work. Last night was our final event and we (okay so mostly me) wanted to give her a small token of our appreciation. I stopped by Starbucks and picked her up a tumbler and a gift card.

Now since she works over at EPA, it was only fitting that I repurpose a previously used Starbucks bag to put her gift in. Her favorite color is blue, so this is what I came up with:

The pattern paper is from the DCWV Green Tea stack. I LOVE that stack. The blue and green is just some solid cardstock I've had forever that I'm trying to use up. I cut the "Thank You" and its shadow from New Arrivals at 3 inches. The diamond on the gift card holder is just a 2 inch square that I cut with my trimmer. I cut the mat behind the words from Elegant Edges at 6 inches.

These gift card holders come together so quickly, I'm going to sit down and make ALL KINDS of them. Birthday, baby, graduation, etc. The possibilities are endless. I promised that I would give you the dimensions for my gift card holder so here they are!

I cut a piece of cardstock at 3.5 by 8. Then scored at 2 1/8 and 5 3/4. I fold and secure the edges of the 2 1/8 side to make a pocket. For the pattern paper I just remeasured each front flap and took 1/8 inch off the total. Sorry, I forgot to write that down...I'll do an update later today.

I had been using velcro to secure the flap, but for this one I used a ribbon. I secured it down before I put the pattern down.

Heartfelt Thanks Gift Card Holders

Greetings dear blog friends,

I have been trying to get these whole craft space redo organized, but I keep getting sidetracked. I made a few more gift card holders today and wanted to share them with you.

I used that same paper pack as in my previous post, which was from Me & My Big Ideas. It's called "We Go to School" and has some really cute papers in it. I used A Child's Year for the tag.

I've listed this as a set of 6 in my Etsy store, here.

I'll share the measurements with you in the next post.

Stay Crafty.

Where to begin...

So I know I've been gone for a while, I honestly didn't mean to be. Things just get a little crazy and I spend like a month laying around rejecting the world and all that are in it. However, I'm trying to get back into the swing of things.

I've been rearranging my craft space (AGAIN). I'm now working out of my dining room and bought some nice bookshelves to hold all of my crafty things. Now to just bring it all up from the basement. My YourStory died over the weekend, darn thing wouldn't even turn on. I hope that PC will replace it, I've only used it once. Therefore, I wasn't able to finish my hall passes for my college roommate that is now a fantastic social studies teacher.

Instead, I worked on finishing some baby albums and made a quick gift card holder. Sorry about the dark photos.

I wanted to make some gift card holders to put up in my Etsy shop. With all the back to school hoopla that is going on, I figured....why not make them school themed. I found some 8x8 paper pads on clearance at Michael's for 3.99, so I picked them up. I want to say they were DCWV, but I could be wrong. I still need to add some velcro or something to keep them closed on their own.

Cute, huh? Well I'm off to make some more and get these Halloween crafts started. I promise I will be back soon with some more crafts.

Stay Crafty!!

Classroom Decorations

Hi y'all!!

Sorry I've been M.I.A again. Just been so darn busy lately. As the kiddos get ready to go back to school, I reached out to a couple of my teacher friends (I still can't believe some of them are teachers!) to see what kinds of things they would want/need in their classrooms from a crafty friend like me. Of course they all said cute stuff for the walls, banners, etc. My old college roommate said she wanted hall passes. GENIUS!!

Since she teaches middle school, I didn't want these to be all cutesy.

Front

Teacher's Name/Room Number on Back

I used George and Basic Shapes for the tag, cut on blackout shadow at 6 inches. The letters are from Cricut Classic Font cut at 1 inch. The icons are cut from Going Places at 2.5 inches. Once I had all the pieces glued together, I ran each one through my YourStory to laminate it (these things have to last through the school year). I then punched a hole with my cropadile (larger hole setting) and set an eyelet to reinforce the hole. Last, but not least, I added a 36 inch lanyard that I found on Amazon. Viola!! Aren't they just perfect?

I've listed these in my Etsy shop, here. Come back soon as I have some more projects up my sleeves.

Keira's Double Digit Crafting Birthday Bash

Keira's Double Digit Crafting Birthday Bash

Welcome To Keira’s Double-Digit Birthday Crafting Bash!

Oh, the dilemma of it all, what to get a talented gal such as Keira who is going to be 10 for her birthday!!!!! I know what, let's have a blog hop for her .....

Keira has sooo many talents and likes such as:

she will be going in the 5th grade, loves dogs and cats, loves to garden, is a competitive gymnast, but more importantly, she is the best crafting partner Lisa Woodward could have!  At 9, she can use a cricut independently, and with SCAL and CCR. She likes to paper piece and scrapbook and loves making cards for everyone~and everything!!!!  Hallmark may not have a card for “Sorry my Golden Retriever ate your shoe at my sleepover” but Keira sure does!  Keira crafts along side Lisa, working on her own projects, and with helping Lisa with hers.  Now, bear in mind that Keira is not a "kid" crafter so to speak but her skills go way beyond pipe cleaners and pom poms!

We have a talented group of crafters to help Keira celebrate her birthday and know she will be hopping along as part of her "surprise" .....

Our complete line-up is:
Day 1
1. Lisa W.~ http://mycraftyspaces.blogspot.com
2. Kimberly ~ http://scrappingrookie.blogspot.com
3. Lynne ~ http://slasewcraftiness.blogspot.com/
4. Miriam - http://miriamscreations.blogspot.com
5. Christine ~ http://customcreativeexpressions.blogspot.com/
6. Rachelle~http://creationsbyrachelle.blogspot.com
7. Daisy- http://tsunamirosedesigns.blogspot.com
8. Shawnee ~ http://quiverofangels.blogspot.com
9. Jenny~ http://cccjalessi.blogspot.com.
Day 2
10. Lisa ~ http://handmadewithlove-lisa.blogspot.com/
11. Edwina ~ http://edwinascreations.blogspot.com/

16. Sarah - http://simplyshaddock.blogspot.com
17. Natasha - http://craftingwithnatasha.blogspot.com/
20. Theresa http://scrappinginheels.blogspot.com/

If you're just visiting me today, I'm thrilled but wouldn't want you to miss a single birthday wish to this special 10 year old!!!! The hop begins with Lisa. If you have arrived from Sarah then you are most definitely following the cake crumbs and the birthday banners and streamers!!!

I decided to do a simple card to go along with some unused supplies from my stash. A girl has got to have her stash, right? We were told that one of Keira's favorite colors is pink. I had gotten the animal print paper at Micheal's a few months ago and hadn't to use it, so I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I decided to do one of those stand-up cards. I've been meaning to try my hand at one, so why not. Here's the final product. Sorry about the dark photos, I've relocated up to my dining room and the lighting is horrible!
Flat front

Standing Front

Standing Side

I used Elegant Edges for the sentiment background (my new play thing) and Don Juan for the "10". Simple, easy, and FAB-U-LOUS!!

Time to cut the cake..WAIT..this is a blog hop party, there's no cake..there's CANDY! We have some awesome sponsors for this blog hop who are offering some great prizes!

Football Birthday Banner

I did it. I finally got some crafting done and finished up a project that I've had partly done for like a year. Yes, I know....sad isn't it. I have a set listed on Etsy for a football themed birthday, but have been wanting to add a banner to it. Soooo, here it is:

Oh look, I've painted my living room too. It's just a simple banner, but I think it helps tie in the theme. I haven't been doing many boy themed birthdays, so that's my goal for the month. To make more things for boys, since that what all my friends seem to be having lately.

Baby Shower Fun

Hello Bloggy Friends, it is I.

Ok sorry for all of the dramatics. It's been a really long time and I apologize. When you have an autoimmune disease, you really don't have control over when you feel good and when you feel bad. It's been tolerable, but generally bad over the past month and a half. But that's not why you are reading my post. I have fun stuff for you today. Yesterday, I helped out at a baby shower. I took my Cricut, iron, fabric paint, and set out to make custom onesies for the expecting parents. The guest are the ones that picked out what they wanted, I just cut it and showed them how to apply to stencils to the shirts.

Here are the results:

Thanks for stopping in! Stay Crafty.

Crafting Hiatus Over (Hopefully)

Wow, I didn't even realize that it had been a month since I last posted on the blog. Have you missed me. Yeah, I know you probably didn't even know that I was gone. Last month I backed away from a lot of things due to my stomach and I just hate how much of an effect that it has on me. I put my Etsy shop in vacation mode, I stashed my cricut, I was just MIA. Now that summer is approaching, things are going to be even more crazy around here. My sister is up for the summer from Georgia. Miss A will be going to summer camp. There's my Etsy shop, the baby showers, wedding showers, and the fact that I still need to craft. I made time tomorrow to do some crafting. That's it. I have no other option. I have a huge order of 100 birthday invitations and 35 thank you cards. Funny how when you have the pressures of a deadline, you get your butt moving. Ok, enough of the rant. I'll be back to posting projects soon. PROMISE!!

Meet Me On Monday #66

Meet Me on Monday is back!! Here's my answers.

Questions:

1.  I wish _________
Currently I wish that my tummy would just be normal. I'm missing out on so many things: my crafting, my family, my friends

2.  If you could witness any event past, present or future, what would it be?
Hmm, this is a hard one. Ok, I got it. I would love to witness the first human settlement in space. ;-)

I mean, it's eventually going to happen. Probably not in my lifetime, but don't you think that would cool?

3.  Do you like to cook?
Yes and no. I love to eat, so therefore I have to cook. I hate to clean up after cooking though.

4.  What do you like to do to get exercise?
I loathe exercising. I wish I had an elliptical at home or something that way I could be in front of the TV and just get it over with.

5.  How tidy are you?
There are certain rooms in the house that I just cannot stand to be dirty, the kitchen and the bathroom. All of the other rooms are fairly tidy, but I can only do so much and the other people in my house are always making a mess.

Easter Layout 2012

Good Morning everyone,

I have a quick Easter layout to share with you today. Another group that I belong to challenged me to use only pastel colors, a bunny, and an egg image to create a layout. I have to be honest, the creative juices haven't been flowing lately. On top of that, my stomach has decided after being quiet for a couple of months that it needs some attention. So anyway, here's my half-sleep, no motivation layout. My apologies for the bad lighting.

I didn't really have a lot of pastel colored paper. So I found the lightest shades of purple, pink, and yellow that I had. Ok, so black isn't really a pastel, but it's a neutral so I threw it in there. ;-)

I used A Child's Year for all the cuts. The massive egg (that I'm using as a photo mat) was cut on Fit to Length at 10 inches. The title was cut at 2 inches and the little girl feeding the rabbit was cut at 4 inches.  My title isn't adhered down due to not being able to find my Zig 2-Way glue pen. Have I mentioned that my Scrap Cave is a disaster? I need to do some serious spring cleaning down there!

Spring is in the air

Hello everyone,

Now that I have gotten those wedding invitations out of the way, I can really get back to focusing on some other crafts. I added a new taste of spring to my Etsy shop, take a look...

The basketball invitations have been a huge hit in my shop, so I thought I'd try some baseball invites too. I cut these from "Life's A Party" at 4 inches. This card is a bit different as the bottom layer needs to be red and the top layer is in 3 parts. When I get a moment, I'm going to add the cupcake toppers and wrappers to the shop too.

I'll be back with some scrapbooking layouts soon. I PROMISE!!

Feeling Removed from Life

Hello to all of my blog friends. I'm sorry that I have been so out of touch lately. I haven't been blogging, tweeting, or anything really. I've been so caught up in work (you that place that helps me fund my scrappy hobby), wedding invitations (again), and my Etsy store that I just haven't really had a chance to be me. I haven't even been reading blogs.

I have a lot of ideas of things I want to get done and hopefully I can get back into blogging regularly. The place that I had been going to crops at said they were closing and have kept extending their "final" date. So, I gave up on them. I really enjoyed going there, but I feel as though they are taking advantage of the people that come there regularly. So now I'm on the hunt to find new places to crop. Last weekend I went to a fellow Scrap That buddies house. I didn't end up getting much done, because I was helping a couple of ladies learn how to use the Cricut better.

Speaking of the Cricut, does anyone else feel like all of the new cartridges being released aren't up to the standards they used to provide? There's a lot of recycles images, in my opinion.

Anyway, I hope to be back soon with more regular posts and some awe-worthy projects.

Until then, stay crafty

Toilet Paper Roll Mini Album

Good Evening Bloggers,

Sorry I've been so distant lately, it hasn't been intentional, I promise. It's just sometimes life gets in the way and you have no choice but to stop.

Last Saturday, I went to my final crop at Scrap That in NJ. I've met a handful of really wonderful ladies there and hope that we all get a chance to get together even without Scrap That. One of the regulars asked if we would help her make toiler paper roll minis for her cancer patients. Now you all know I just love to help people, so I couldn't say "yes" fast enough. There's only one problem: I've never actually made a toilet paper roll mini before.

So here goes nothing!

Well, how'd I do? I used an S.E.I paper pack that I found on clearance at Michael's over the summer.

Stay crafty!

Just another Tuesday

Good Morning bloggy friends,

Oh that's right, today is Valentine's Day. BAH HUMBUG.

I just haven't been in the mood to celebrate holidays lately. I was asked to do two cards for a coworker. If she wouldn't have asked, I wouldn't have done any crafts for V-Day.

Sorry about the bad lighting in the photos, I forgot to snap pictures before I came to work today. The bee is cut from Create-A-Critter (3 inches) and the hearts are from George and Basic Shapes (1.25 inches). I printed the sentiments from my computer.

Have a wonderful day.

Meet Me on Monday

Hello!! Until Java starts posting MMOM again, Acting Balanced has decided to host. Link up and share your causal and unusual with us!!

Acting Balanced

1. Are you planning anything for Valentine's Day?
Nope. I got Miss A some Valentines to take to school, but that's about it.
2. What song automatically popped into your head when you saw this question?
I've had Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" in my head all morning. Darn you Grammys!!
3. What did you have for breakfast today?
Apple and Cinnamon oatmeal
4. Where do you keep your keys?
They are usually in my coat pocket.
5. Who was your favorite teacher from when you were in school?
I would have to say my favorite teacher was my 6th grade teacher Miss Campbell. She shared a passion for geography and history like I do.

Let's Party

Hi Blogging Friends!

Just wanted to drop in really quickly and show you another invitations I'm adding to the list:

With soccer, er I mean football, season getting ready to start I thought it would be only fitting to do these.

I cut this really cute invitation from "Life's A Party" at 4 inches. The "Let's Party" is from Just Wordz Everyday Sentiments collection. I'll check back in soon

Random Post: It's Winter (the cat)

Hey Blog Friends,

I have so much on my plate right now. I'll be sharing some things soon, but for now I'm going to brag about my wonderful kitty.

If you recall we adopt a cat back in Sept/Oct. Miss A decided to call her Winter. Here's some updated photos of our lovely kitty.

What can I say, it's a cat in a box

Pleading with me to feed her before dinner time

A real party animal, fast asleep on New Year's Eve
Well thanks for stopping in, and I promise I will have some crafty projects for you soon.
